Kevin Weil and DJ Patil have spent their careers bringing new technology to hard problems. When they started thinking about what to build next, we spent time with them working through where AI could do the most good. They kept coming back to the same problem: science moves only as fast as people can run experiments, and AI models for science don't have enough real lab data to learn from. Two more co-founders joined them: Sol Reisberg and Mano Paluri. Together, they are building Warp Sciences. We sat down with Kevin and DJ to ask a few questions about what they're building and why now. Their answers have been lightly edited for clarity.\r\n\r\n***SD: What are you building at Warp, and why did you choose to dedicate yourself to this opportunity?***\r\n\r\n***KW:** Our mission at Warp is to help the world discover new medicines faster and to build the capacity to do it here in America. So we bring together AI, robotics, and life sciences in automated labs that can design, run, and learn from experiments. Each experiment that we do will make the next one better.*\r\n\r\n*We are not developing drugs of our own. We're building the infrastructure for people who do. And we're bringing it back to America.*\r\n\r\n*I think this is the most meaningful thing that I can possibly work on.*\r\n\r\n*I was at OpenAI before, and I helped start the team focused on AI and science. [I] saw through our work in mathematics how dramatically AI can accelerate areas of science, and how good that can be.*\r\n\r\n*We are now seeing AI solve Millennium Problems. Obviously, it's taken the entire software world by storm. And every software engineer, and every normal person that isn't a software engineer, can now build things that they could have never imagined before. That's amazing.*\r\n\r\n*But AI isn't yet having that same kind of impact in the life sciences and in the physical sciences broadly: in chemistry and biology, material science. And there's no more important place for it to have that kind of impact, because when we see AI accelerating the life sciences the way that it's accelerating software engineering and mathematics, that means we're going to get more medicines, we're going to get more lives saved.*\r\n\r\n*It's the most important thing I can imagine working on.*\r\n\r\n*AI isn't yet fundamentally changing this field. But we need it to. And the way to make that happen… the difference between mathematics and life sciences is [that] these fields are very experimentally driven. You need to run experiments at scale, generate data at a scale that can help you build the models that make this all possible.*\r\n\r\n*So that's what we're trying to do. It's a combination of physical AI and scientific model building. It's not going to be easy. There's a lot of work to do. But if we get this right, it will change the world.*\r\n\r\n***SD: Why is this the perfect time to launch and build Warp? Why not a year ago or a year from now?***\r\n\r\n***DP:** First off, I agree with everything Kevin said. I think now is unique because we have a couple of trend lines that are going at once.*\r\n\r\n*Number one, we have the wave of foundation models that are enabling [science] in this incredible, powerful way. We're seeing the feedback cycles. We get to ride that wave. Second, we've got the wave of robotics and what robotics can actually solve for. And then the third one is that we now have the capability to produce incredible amounts of data.*\r\n\r\n*There's actually a fourth one, which is a problem: so much of our infrastructure has been offshored. Outside the United States, it's China, but it's also other countries where a lot of this is taking place. And so we are almost at the last exit to actually get this back. We've seen how much we've actually lost with drones, solar. You could go down the list. But this is our last exit to actually bring this back.*\r\n\r\n*The reason that this is so personal to me is I think of it as unfinished business, having been able to work in healthcare, even at the federal level. This just literally happened to me today: I was sitting down with a woman who's in remission from cancer. I was just telling her about Warp, and the first thing she said was, \"Thank you for choosing to do this.\" She said, \"You guys could do any AI thing you want. Thank you for doing this.\"*\r\n\r\n*So this is a unique moment to have courage, to try to pull all these ideas together in this way, to push for this audacious goal, because there's some loved one out there that doesn't have the medicine they need, as Kevin pointed out. There's somebody who's waiting, and we can't wait. No one wants to see their child suffer. No one wants to see a loved one suffer. And too much of that is happening.*\r\n\r\n*And we have the ability to have AI solve these incredible things. We're gonna have AI find new targets and do amazing things, but if we don't have the partnership that actually gets to the atoms and molecules, you have a theoretical compound. You have a theoretical idea, a hope, a dream. That isn't a cure.*\r\n\r\n***SD: What's the long-term mission and goal for Warp? What's the impact that can be unlocked when Warp succeeds?***\r\n\r\n***KW:** I think there is going to be a fundamentally new way of doing science that we'll see emerge over the next five or 10 years: large-scale automated laboratories that can generate data at significant volume and can use that data to train really good AI models that accelerate science broadly. I think that needs to happen across a range of different scientific verticals. It's not just in drug discovery, but that's certainly one of the most meaningful.*\r\n\r\n*That's the reason we start where we're starting, by building a small-molecule preclinical CRO [contract research organization]. This is currently one of the longest parts of the drug discovery process. So if we can help the world compress this, then you get more medicines faster. It's scientifically important, it's commercially important, and it's geopolitically important.*\r\n\r\n*And then, of course, if we can automate this major part of the critical scientific process, then over time we can expand to other areas. The technology we're going to build will allow us to do this at a broad scale across multiple industries, but we really want to get one right before we even think about that.*\r\n\r\nWarp is building labs where AI designs experiments, robots run them, and every result, failures included, improves the next one. The company is starting with a U.S.-based preclinical lab that helps drug developers make and test molecules faster. Each experiment is useful to a customer and also produces the data that makes the models better. As DJ put it, a theoretical compound isn't a cure. Getting from an idea to a medicine still takes real work in a real lab, and we believe Kevin, DJ, Sol, and Mano are the right team to build it.\r\n\r\nRead more [here](https://warp.xyz/what-we-believe).",{"id":35,"assetUrl":8},"647",{"assetUrl":8},[],"warp-every-experiment-moves-us-forward",[40,67],{"fullName":41,"teamSubcategories":42,"slug":53,"image":54,"abbreviatedTitle":63,"focusAreas":64,"emailAddress":65,"bio":66},"Somesh Dash",[43,49],{"name":44,"slug":45,"teamCategory":46},"Digital Health","digital-health",{"name":47,"slug":48},"Investors","investors",{"name":50,"slug":51,"teamCategory":52},"Infrastructure","infrastructure",{"name":47,"slug":48},"somesh-dash",{"id":55,"alt":7,"caption":8,"assetUrl":56,"assetUrlXs":57,"assetUrlSm":58,"assetUrlMd":59,"assetUrlLg":60,"assetUrlXl":61,"assetUrlXxl":62},"2389","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/xs_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/sm_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/md_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/lg_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/xl_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2389/xxl_IVP_Headshots_1090px_D_Somesh.jpg","General Partner","Security & Defensetech, Healthcare AI, Global Consumer Platforms","sdash@ivp.com","In the first decade of my career, I encountered two major economic downturns: the dot-com collapse of 2001 and the global financial crisis of 2007–2008. Widespread bankruptcies and layoffs made palpable how difficult the startup journey is for founders and how essential it is to keep the macro in mind as you scale. Since then, I’ve found that this growth mindset applies to most facets of life. Rather than isolating risks and failures, I strive to identify potential and tackle challenges through collaborative problem solving. \r\n\r\nAs an investor, the sectors I work in exist at inflection points that are truly historic. An onslaught of data paired with the transition to cloud is transforming the software landscape. Threat vectors in security are increasing in scope and severity. The shift from PC to mobile to AI platforms is generating persistent evolution in consumer experiences. And healthcare is forever changed by COVID-19. Playing even a small part as a partner to the companies most likely to transform these industries is incredibly meaningful to me. \r\n\r\nOver the years, I’ve found that the best founders are exceptional by definition—no two are the same. Some are introverts, others extroverts; some are operationally detailed, others are strategic masterminds. What all successful founders share is unwavering commitment and perseverance. The road from startup to scale-up is fraught with risks and challenges, and the greatest leaders are those who can will themselves and their teams to succeed despite the odds.",{"fullName":68,"teamSubcategories":69,"slug":76,"image":77,"abbreviatedTitle":63,"focusAreas":86,"emailAddress":87,"bio":88},"Ajay Vashee",[70,74],{"name":71,"slug":72,"teamCategory":73},"Apps","apps",{"name":47,"slug":48},{"name":44,"slug":45,"teamCategory":75},{"name":47,"slug":48},"ajay-vashee",{"id":78,"alt":7,"caption":8,"assetUrl":79,"assetUrlXs":80,"assetUrlSm":81,"assetUrlMd":82,"assetUrlLg":83,"assetUrlXl":84,"assetUrlXxl":85},"2016","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/xs_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/sm_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/md_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/lg_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/xl_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","https://assets.ivp.com/system/uploads/fae/image/asset/2016/xxl_IVP_Headshots_1090px_A_Ajay_Vashee.jpg","Artificial Intelligence, Future of Work, Finance Transformation","ajay@ivp.com","I came to IVP from Dropbox, where I guided the company through its IPO and first several years as a public company. As a first-time CFO, I stepped into a leadership role early in my career, and learned firsthand how to build, support and inspire a high-performing team. I also grew to embrace the uncertainty that’s inherent to leading a growth-stage company. I’m most proud of the impact my organization had—helping Dropbox scale to billions in ARR and hundreds of millions of users. \r\n\r\nAs an investor, I’m always on the lookout for companies that are solving big problems in market categories on the precipice of disruptive change. My experience as an operator is invaluable to my work at IVP, and I’m committed to being a hands-on, active partner to every company I invest in. I’m also focused on helping IVP build platform capabilities closely attuned to the needs of our founders. It’s why we launched the CFO Collective—the first community of its kind—which brings the brightest minds in strategic finance together to support one another and lay the groundwork for the future.","Warp: Every Experiment Moves Us Forward",1792688581493]
